Why Your Self-Tan Streaks (and How to Stop It for Good)

Let's be blunt: a streaky self-tan has never once been the tan's fault. It's method - or the lack of one. Happily, the method is short, forgiving, and mostly comes down to owning the right two objects. Here are the three rules that turn “streaky” into something you'd have to try to achieve.

1. Prep the canvas

Streaks adore a dry patch - knuckles, elbows, knees, ankles, the usual suspects. Thirsty, dead skin grabs extra colour and then sheds it unevenly a few days later. Exfoliate everywhere you'll tan 24 hours before, pay special attention to the rough spots, and skip heavy moisturiser on tan day. Do that and you've disarmed most of the crime scene before you've even opened the bottle.

2. Fire your hands. Hire the mitt.

Bare hands are enthusiastic and hopeless: they drag, they blotch, and they leave your palms looking like you high-fived a pumpkin. A velvet application mitt glides while you simply steer. Work in long, confident sweeps - one direction, and resist the urge to go back over half-dry product.

3. Stop tanning blind

You streak when you can't see where you've been. A tinted mousse with a built-in colour guide lets you admire your handiwork in real time - no mystery misses, no doubling back. Our self-tan mousse goes on tinted so every pass is visible: buff in circles, finish in long lines, like you meant it.

Already streaky? Don't panic

Whatever you do, don't reapply over the top. Step into a warm shower and buff the uneven areas with an exfoliating mitt to lift the excess, then even things out with one light layer once your skin is dry. For a full reset, read how to fix a bad tan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my self-tan go patchy as it fades?

Patchy fading is almost always prep and hydration. Dry areas hold colour and then flake, taking the tan with them. Exfoliate before, moisturise daily after, and the fade stays smooth and even.

Do I really need a tanning mitt?

Yes - it's the single biggest upgrade to an even finish. It prevents streaks, keeps your palms clean, and spreads product smoothly in a way fingers never will.

How do I avoid streaky hands and feet?

Use only the product already left on the mitt for hands and feet, and claw your hand slightly so colour doesn't settle into the knuckle creases.
