Here's a fact that should make your glow feel a little more glamorous: the tan you love started life as a laboratory mistake. In the 1950s a researcher working with a sugar called dihydroxyacetone - DHA - noticed that the skin it touched turned brown. No sun, no danger, just colour. That accident is the entire foundation of modern self-tan.
What DHA actually is
DHA is a simple, naturally derived sugar. It isn't a dye and it doesn't sink in to stain you. It reacts - only with the outermost layer of dead skin cells - in a process chemists call the Maillard reaction. If that name rings a bell, it's because it's the same reaction that browns a loaf of bread or sears a steak. Your tan is, essentially, gently toasting the very top of your skin. Deliciously put.
Why it takes a few hours to appear
The Maillard reaction is slow and steady. That's why you apply a mousse at night and wake up bronzed - the colour develops over six to eight hours as the DHA works through those surface cells. It's also why the tan fades gradually and evenly: as your skin naturally sheds that top layer over five to seven days, the colour goes with it. No UV, no damage, just chemistry doing its quiet thing.
Why the formula around the DHA matters
DHA browns warm by nature, which is exactly why a cheap formula can tip orange. The fix is what you pair it with.
