Why clean ingredients matter
What we leave out is the whole point.
"Clean" gets thrown around like a virtue badge. We mean something more boring and more useful: the ingredients we leave out are the reason the tan behaves - hydrating instead of clogging, fading evenly instead of marbling, and not smelling like a science experiment by dinner.
What we leave out
Mineral oils and petroleum. Cheap tans use them to spread easily; they also sit on top of skin and block pores. We skip them.
Parabens and sulfates. Nothing your skin needs, and plenty it can be sensitive to. Not here.
The burnt-biscuit fragrance load. That harsh DHA smell gets buried in cheap formulas under heavy synthetic scent. We start from cocoa butter and coconut instead, so there's far less to cover up.

What we leave in
Real coconut water - about 95% water and 5% electrolytes - so skin hydrates while the colour develops, landing plush rather than tight.
Cocoa butter and vitamins C and E - so the tan doubles as light skincare, not just pigment.
Green and violet undertones - the anti-orange technology that keeps your bronze reading natural instead of brassy.

Clean is a performance decision, not a moral one
Every Brownies formula is vegan and PETA-certified cruelty-free - but that's the baseline, not the pitch. The real reason to read the ingredient list is that a cleaner one simply makes a better tan: more even, more comfortable, longer-wearing. Virtue is a nice side effect.
Read the back of the bottle. Then wear it without thinking about it again.
Quick questions, honest answers
Is Brownies self-tan vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes - every formula is vegan and certified cruelty-free by PETA, and made without parabens, sulfates or mineral oils.
Do clean self-tanners work as well as regular ones?
Better, in the ways that matter: a water-based coconut formula hydrates while it develops and fades evenly, where oil-heavy formulas can clog pores and marble as they wear off.
Will a clean formula still last?
Yes. Longevity comes from how the pigment binds and how you care for skin afterwards, not from petroleum. Moisturise daily and a clean tan lasts just as long - five to seven days.
